i've had the chance to indulge in video and audio AND also text on the internet this morning. it led me down a curious chain of thought:

information, being the most important thing of our universe (along with 150 other things), is containerised as heck!!!!

think about it. we only have so many senses, thus two factors that determine the shape of information are:

format

length

that's it. watch me plot it on a table:

long (hours)

short (minutes)

tiny (seconds)

text

book

blog post

tweet

audio

podcast

song (+voicemail)

sfx/ringtone

video

movie

youtube/tv

shorts/reels

of course there are nuances - images exist and take on many forms (from memes to comic books); some types are more reinforced and more closely fit the definition of 'information'...

but these are genuine constraints. twitter enforces a limit on message length. tv episodes often run for 22 or 44 minutes to leave room for ad breaks. hell, the capacity of 78rpm records is what made pop songs roughly 3 minutes in length.

and i HATE containers!! WAITER!!! i want a 40 minute prog song and a 10 word blog post.

sometimes the container is inviting - 'try to make something of this shape!'. other times, i'm afraid to succumb to it - my site is my home, i want IT to fit my needs, not the opposite, and house this post, a 2 word post and a wall of text, equally well.

this part is a challenge i'm still figuring out

Simon Willison is a prominent tech blogger who puts out multiple posts every day (!!). for over a year now i've been enamored with their work and indie web as a whole

one interview has Simon mention:

My number one tip for blogging is to lower your standards! Aim to hit publish while you are still actively unhappy with what you have written, because the only alternative is a huge folder full of drafts and never publishing anything at all.

Nobody will ever know how perfect the thing you intended to write would have been. The flaws you see in your writing are invisible to everyone else.

i couldn't agree more! ...problem is, the more you hear of certain advice the more resilient you become to it. "just start writing" loses its meaning rapidly. as silly as it is, for the past year i've been rebuilding this very site, over and over, in a loop.

but "lead by example" they say! while it didn't immediately click with me, a couple months later this entry of theirs on video generation (minimax h3 is goated btw) made me laugh hard:

...The video is impressive, but the audio is weird speech-like garbage, because I didn't provide any prompt guidance as to what the audio should be. The prompting guide (which I didn't read prior to this experiment) has a whole bunch of information on how to get this to work.

like come onnnn, just regenerate the video?? no? instead they leave a comment documenting their mistake

i think that's beautiful
